25-26 Warriors preseason summary report: Why are there so many mistakes? What is worth looking forward to in the new season?
As a preseason game in which both sides fed each other came to an abrupt end, the Warriors also completed all preseason games. The reason why I am writing this article now is because I see that many brothers in the district seem to be dissatisfied with their performance in the preseason, so after the emotions have calmed down a little, we will take the first quarter of yesterday's game against the Clippers, which had the most frequent mistakes, as an example to see why those disappointing mistakes were made. 1. Error analysis with pictures 1. Let’s look at the first ball. After the jump ball, Bodemski held the ball, and Horford caught Bill’s misalignment. Notice that Bodemski made a tactical gesture, not sure whether to direct Horford to step forward in the pick-and-roll or to let Horford continue to follow the pass. (The author prefers the latter) However, Bill did a very good job with a small attack and a big one. Horford had difficulty getting rid of the defense and finding space to receive the ball, so he moved up to try to catch the ball. Podemski did not pass the ball in place and made a mistake. 2. In an attack not long after, Podemski held the ball for half the court. Horford and Green set up a fake double screen on the line. Horford made a short pick-and-roll and passed down. Podemski handed Green the ball. At this time, Horford got rid of Bill and passed down. Pay attention to Bodemski's gesture However, Green did not pass the ball to Horford immediately. Bill once again got into a struggle with Horford, and the opportunity was fleeting. Horford had no choice but to bounce the ball out again as a pivot. Green signaled a change of tactics. Obviously this was an off-ball tactic with Green as a screen (I don’t know if it was for Curry or Podemski. The author’s preference is Podemski) Pay attention to Green’s gestures However, Green seemed to suddenly change his mind. He made a fake pick-and-roll and suddenly started, running down the line to suppress Bill. At this time, Horford could pass to Podemski, or he could hand the ball to Green and then handle it (such as passing it to Richard in the corner). Horford chose to pass to Podemski and made a mistake in passing. It is worth mentioning that after Green made the back screen gesture, not only did he not execute it, but neither Podemski nor Curry seemed to see the gesture. I wonder if there was a communication problem. Pay attention to Curry's gestures 3. (Podemski was hit and suspected of being violated but did not call it, which is considered a mistake. It is an accident and will not be elaborated here) 4. This The ball was a fast break after the opponent made a mistake. Derrick Jones Jr. returned to defense very quickly. Richard sought stability and did not pass the ball-leading pass. Hield was afraid of Jones' athletic ability and chose to pass it to Green behind him and then relocate. Green's pass missed. 5. This ball was a serve. There was a communication error between Green and Curry, and Derrick Jones accepted the gift 6. This ball was drawn by Curry after a pick-and-roll and passed to Richard in the corner. Richard attacked the basket. Dunn decisively assisted in defense. Richard had good awareness of passing one more hand, but his technique was rough and the pass went out of bounds. 7. For this ball, Curry called Horford's high short pick and roll However, Horford did not cut in along the fastest straight line, but suspected With an outside shot, after seeing Curry being pressed, he cut inward Then, Horford was entangled with Bill again, without completely getting stuck. Bill went around and successfully stole the ball. 8. When the ball passed half court, Curry made a "3" gesture, indicating the No. 3 tactic. After crossing with Richard at the elbow, Curry moved toward the baseline. Pay attention to the positions of Curry and Horford at this time. This seems to be a corner tactic with Curry and Horford covering the ball. Horford had already stepped forward to cover However, Richard neither made a tactical gesture nor prepared to catch the ball. He lowered his head and ran toward the baseline. Green made a mistake in passing the ball. Green was very disappointed with the ball. 9. Just one round later, the same problem occurred again. Richard moved to the baseline again, and Hilder made a pass error. Hilder expressed his incomprehension. 10. When Post handled the ball, he did not raise it high, nor did he pass it to Podemski in the bottom corner in time. The ball was missed 11. Podemski did not break through Miller's defense, nor did he use his strength to create space in the low post, which was a walking violation. Summary time! In fact, looking at it this way, apart from the explosion of mistakes, it is actually not too bad, because in my opinion, most of the mistakes can be avoided and solved. What are the common problems? 1. Horford is old, and his lower body strength and agility are obviously insufficient, making it difficult to obtain stable space in the low post. In this game, Cole made a very targeted Horford-Beal matchup arrangement, but because Horford was unable to suppress Beal in the low post, he made many mistakes. 2. In terms of tactical integration, Horford has not yet straightened out the logic of the Warriors' outside bombs and downfields. In the Celtics, he may need more outside bombs, but in the Warriors, he needs to change some ideas and communicate better with his teammates. 3. Richard doesn’t look at his teammates a bit, especially when the same problem occurs twice in a row. This is intolerable. As a newcomer on the court, he should communicate more about his running intentions (for example, for the same two mistakes, he should signal Curry to step forward to catch the ball. Clear the top of the arc yourself) 4. Green is terrible every day, too lazy to talk about it. I hope he can adjust as soon as possible 5. Podemski has good screen and passing awareness, but his technique needs to be refined, and it has once again proven that his lack of speed as the main attacker is a flaw.. What is worth looking forward to in the new season? Last season, the biggest problem for the Warriors was that it was "difficult to find players with both size and defense." However, during this offseason, they introduced Horford, Melton, and Richard, three players who can be considered both offensive and defensive at the same position. It can be said that this problem can be alleviated. But the new problem lies in the "weakness of the forward." It can be seen from the game against the Clippers that Horford's dislocation threat in the low post is shrinking sharply, and this is exactly where a striker is needed. Butler and Kuminga's strength advantage in the low post will be able to bridge this point well. But after these two, the only striker the Warriors can offer is one of Santos's level, which can be said to be stretched thin. Therefore, it is imperative to either let Kuminga continue to practice and integrate low-post tactics, or even if he is traded, he must be traded to the forward line. The second problem is health. On the basis of the general aging of this lineup, the Warriors may often face the situation where one or two of Curry, Horford, Butler, and Green cannot play. Various permutations and combinations may bring about different lineup play styles. For example, if Curry is not available, how can the low-speed position battle around Butler improve efficiency? When Butler is away, how should the defense lineup with Curry as the core face forward attacks? When Horford is away, how should Green be relieved and free up space? These are questions Cole needs to think about. However, no matter what, I still saw the possibility of the Warriors this season in the preseason. Keep looking forward to it, and we will see you in the opening game!
