Chelsea set an embarrassing record: 6 red cards in 9 games, Maresca angrily criticized the players as "stupid"
Chelsea narrowly defeated Wolves 4-3 in the fourth round of the League Cup and successfully advanced. However, the win did not come as a relief to coach Enzo Maresca. Instead, he publicly expressed anger and shame over the team's poor discipline once again. The new player turned two yellows and one red in seven minutes, becoming the latest "sinner" In this game, the 21-year-old new player forward Liam Delap became the focus - but not because of the goal, but because of a disappointing red card. He came on as a substitute in the second half, but received two consecutive yellow cards in just seven minutes and was sent off directly. This is the latest example of Chelsea's recent lack of discipline. Counting Delap, the Blues have received a total of 6 red cards in the last 9 games, setting a record for the highest number of red cards for a single team before November in the history of the Premier League. The situation is extremely grim. Maresca was furious: This was a "stupid and avoidable" shame. After the game, Italian coach Maresca could not hide his anger and bluntly said that the red card was "stupid and completely unnecessary." He said: "We received a very stupid and fully deserved red card. This kind of scene could have been easily avoided. When a player is sent off in this way, as a coaching staff, we feel very ashamed." Maresca also criticized Delap by name: "I have reminded him many times to stay calm, but he seemed to only care about himself on the court and did not listen to any advice." His words revealed dissatisfaction with the professional attitude of young players. Delap’s transfer from Ipswich to Chelsea this summer for 30 million pounds is regarded as an important part of the team’s youth strategy. However, he has not been able to perform stably and has limited playing opportunities. The red card in this game has plunged him into a whirlpool of public opinion and been widely criticized by fans and the media. Victory cannot hide deep-seated problems, and disciplinary rectification is imminent. Although defeating Wolves temporarily relieved the pressure on the team, Maresca clearly realized that if the problems of players' impulsiveness and lack of discipline cannot be solved, Chelsea will have difficulty achieving its long-term goals this season. Frequent attrition not only affects tactical deployment, but also exposes the team's shortcomings in psychological quality and management. For this young Chelsea, there may be no shortage of technical ability, but how to control emotions and maintain professionalism is the real test to success.
