Barcelona quietly terminates contract with 33-year-old veteran

According to Spanish media reports, Barcelona has reached an agreement with 33-year-old midfielder Aurio Romeu before the summer transfer window is closed to terminate the contract early, and the two sides officially parted ways.

Although Romeu's contract was originally scheduled to last until June 2026, he quietly left Camp Nou on August 28, and neither the club nor the players themselves issued any official statement. According to the Ass newspaper, the two parties have reached a financial compensation agreement on early termination of the contract, and the specific details have not been disclosed.

This summer, the Spanish defensive midfielder has received invitations from many clubs such as Girona, but ultimately failed to finalize his new owner. At present, he still has the opportunity to find new positions in other leagues - the transfer window for the Turkish Premier League will be closed on September 12, while the Saudi professional league's signing channels will continue to be open for more than two weeks.

Romeu came from Barcelona's youth training camp Lamacia, and completed his first team debut in 2011, and then transferred to Chelsea. During his career, he played for Valencia and Stuttgart (on loan) and played for seven years in Southampton, making 256 appearances, and was the team's main midfielder.

In 2022, Romeu returned to La Liga to join Girona and performed well. In the summer of 2023, Barcelona signed it back, with a contract period of three years. In his first season, he played 37 games for the team and contributed a steady defense. Last season, he was once again loaned to Girona for more opportunities to play.

The early termination of the contract with Romeu is seen as an important measure for Barcelona to further reduce their salary expenditure. According to sources, club executives are still evaluating more possible personnel adjustments, with goalkeeper Ter Stegen, as well as central defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, all likely to become potential departures in future fiscal restructuring to alleviate the huge financial pressure the club is currently facing.
