NBA coach has become a high-risk profession? Seven of the past ten best coaches have been dismissed. Only 6 teams have not changed their coaches in the past five years
On June 4, there are two days left before the NBA Finals start. The Knicks announced earlier today that the team fired coach Thibodeau. The Knicks' decision quickly attracted heated discussion, and Thibodeau became the fourth coach to be fired this season. It is reported that the Knicks are currently focusing on championship competition and confirming that the new coach will become the focus of the team's next development. Thibodeau has helped the Knicks make four playoffs in the past five years and led the Knicks to win 50+ games in a single season in the first consecutive regular season since the 1990s. This season, he helped the Knicks advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. Last July, Thibodeau just renewed his contract with the Knicks, with a contract of about 3 years and $30 million. Thibodeau began to serve as the Knicks coach in 2020, and in 2021, Thibodeau won the coach of the year. Thibodeau has achieved a record of 226 wins and 174 losses in his five seasons. In four playoff trips, the Knicks achieved a record of 24 wins and 23 losses. The Knicks were eliminated twice and once in the Eastern Conference Finals. It has to be said that the dismissal of Thibodeau is unexpected. It should be noted that when the Knicks were just eliminated, the Knicks said that the team's president, Brunson and other players all supported Thibodeau. Thibodeau became the fifth coach to be dismissed this season. The previous three were: Mike Brown of the Kings, Jenkins of the Grizzlies, and Mike Malone of the Nuggets. More importantly, 7 of the past 10 coaches of the year have left the original team, with only Cole and the last two coaches of the year (Degnot and Atkins) not fired. The past 10 best coaches of the year are as follows: 2016: Cole (Warriors); 2017: D'Antoni (Rocks); 2018: Casey (Raptors); 2019: Budenholzer (Bucks, Suns); 2020: Nas (Raptors); 2021: Thibodeau (Knicks); 2022: Monty (Suns, Pistons); 2023: Mike Brown (King); 2024: Dagenot (Thunder); 2025: Atkins (Cavs). Since the 2020-21 season, only 6 teams have not changed head coaches, namely: Heat (Spoel), Warriors (Cole), Bulls (Donovan), Clippers (Terron Lu), Thunder (Degnot), and Timberwolves (Finch, taking office in the middle of the season).
